Bernie Sanders' Views on Controversial Issues
Same-Sex MarriageBernie Sanders agrees with the Same-Sex Marriage law.
As mayor of Burlington, Vt., Sanders supported a gay pride parade in 1983, saying "we must all be committed to the mutual respect of each other’s lifestyle." Sanders also put through a 1984 housing anti-discrimination ordinance that protected people based on "his or her sexual preference." Equal PaySanders strongly agrees on equal pay for the same amount of work.
Wage gaps affect workers based on a combination of factors including gender and race. Bernie Sanders believes workers deserve equal pay for equal work. He has fought for much of his political career to end discrimination and give working Americans the pay that they deserve. AbortionHe is pro-choice.
"When it comes to the rights of women, we cannot go backwards. We have got to go forward." We are not going back to the days when women had to risk their lives to end an unwanted pregnancy. The decision about abortion must remain a decision for the woman and her doctor to make, not the government. Gun ControlBernie thinks there should be more restrictions on gun control.
Gun Control: Gun control legislation should ultimately fall on individual states, with the exception of instant background checks to prevent firearms from finding their way into the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, and a federal ban on assault weapons. |
